A "wow” moment

Jan 30

No I’m not talking about world of warcraft, but of those moments where I get impressed by something that’s out of the ordinary, innovative.

This wow moment happened when I tried the firefox plug in PicLens, basically this plug in transforms your firefox in a fullscreen slideshow viewer. What’s so nice about it is the nice navigation they implemented in it. It’s so easy to browse images and so well integrated into the browser takes image browsing on the web to a new level.

The only thing is that it doesn’t support every sites, the main ones are there (Flickr, Facebook, Google Images …), but still, at several occasion I thought I’d like to have PicLens support on that particular site.

Try it, it’s really worth it!

WWWW1

Jan 25

That’s right, the World Wide Web War 1 has started.

For those of you who are not aware, last week, a leaked Scientology indoctrination video has been leaked on You Tube, the cult of Scientology contacted You Tube to ask them to remove the video from the website, claiming it was a copyright infringement. Also, several news stories related to that video has been removed from digg. If you want to see the video, Gawker still has a version live.

This incident fired rage from a bunch of hackers, well hacker is quite big word, let’s just say script kiddies. A group who call themselves “anonymous” (FEAR THEM) posted this video on You Tube. The group threatens to bring Scientology’s online presence down for their years of lies.

Over the past weak, several Scientology websites has been victim of DDoS attacks, which brought them down.

What’s interesting in that story, the enormous proportion this story is taking, the story made the news, several websites reported the attacks. It’s big!

Brings me to think talk about the power users have online. This fired the rage of a bunch of users and the reacted! Companies/Individuals have to be very about how they act online, because it is still relatively easy for users to show their dissatisfaction.

It is so hard today for people to raise speach and talk about those events on traditional medias, that’s why the internet is so fun! The space is not yet sold to big corporation, it is not yet moderated and let’s just hope it stays that way!

How productive are you really?

Jan 23

It has been a little while now since I started thinking about where I was a year ago and where I am now in term of productivity. I made various improvements and think I can still improve.

Over the next weeks, I’ll try to post my various tricks and tips as of how you can boost your productivity in making good use of the slice tool, how to indent your CSS properly, how to optimize you class names in your CSS and more if they come to my mind. You are all welcome to share your own productivity tips, always help to work a bit faster and more efficiently!

I’ll even start with the Tip #1!

Make good use of your development software. I personally use textmate, this program is full of keyboard shortcuts, snippets, macros to help you boost your productivity. As every software if you only knows it surface, you won’t be able to fully use the built-in functions. I won’t go into much details as of how you can make textmate work better for you, simply because there are already a bunch of useful tutorials just for it. But one thing for sure, the more I learn about that software, the more I love it and the faster I get.

Tip #1 done! Number 2 will come, how to properly indent your CSS.

Apple Unveils MacBook Air

Jan 15

Today was the highly anticipated Mac World keynote. Lot of speculations were running around the internet, maybe the biggest one was the new MacBook Air one, turned out to be reality and Apple announced it today.

It is the slimmest laptop computer to date and pack some impressive features. Like the 13.3 inches led screen, 5 hours battery life, 3 pounds weight. What look like a nice ultra portable laptop. You even have the possibility to order it with the 64 gigs SSD drive, which sounds good, until you look at the price, over 3000$ for that version…DAMN!

I just don’t see the point of buying a computer like that, I mean the only real point of adding the SSD hard drive would be to have better performance, but then at that price, if you want more performance, why not go for a MacBook Pro. Of course it’s good they release it to the mass market now price will drop and bla bla bla, but people need to buy it for the price to drop. And who in the love of god would go for a 3000$ laptop that don’t even have 2 usb ports, or a graphic card, or a network adapter, or a 15 inch screen.

I guess it’s just the ultra portability tax that apply. It’s still an interesting product, if you compare it to other laptop in the same category it’s cheaper and looks more interesting.

I guess I’ll to get my hand on one to forge a real opinion on it.

Send me one :D

Back from the holidays!

Jan 07

I’m back! I mean fully back, I officially came back to work last week, but it’s the kind of week where you only get back up to date and set things back so you can be ready for full steam work the week after.

And god did I have to get up to date, it was the first time in ages I hadn’t open my computer for over a week. I really wanted not to be on a computer during my holidays, for the sole reason that I spend over 90 hours a week on one, everyone needs a break ;) I even nearly had to re-learn how to use a mouse, I found my mouse so fast at first!

It got me to think how important internet has become, I mean, when I got back online I felt left behind, like this worlds hasn’t stopped moving and at the speed it’s moving, a week is a lot of time.

But anyway, I’m happy I took that time offline, only helped me come back stronger and better.

You ever did it?
